type='text'>Law of the Garbage Truck

"One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so.....

'Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!"

Adversity

"Search for the seed of good in every adversity. We have to be careful what we think, say, and do because we don't want to be sorry we said something we can't take back, did something we can't undo, or thought something that made us act unkindly. If we are always careful to treat others the way we would like to be treated, we surely won't have to worry that life doesn't come with an eraser. Many parents probably wish they could go back and do their life over and bring their children up differently. Many young people who make the wrong decisions probably wish they could live their life over and do it right the second time around. Thinking of the possible consequences of what we think, say, and do will help us make the right choices and not wish for an eraser.

How to have a good day

I read a little bit of one of Norman Vincent Peale's booklets "How to Have a Good Day Every Day" each day. Here is what I read today - thought you might benefit from it, too.

"Here are six suggested aids to feeling healthy today and every day:

1. Think health, not sickness. Mentally picture your body as being perfect both in condition and in function. Do not visualize it as in decline or as deteriorating. Train yourself to stop looking for something to go wrong. Think positively about your physical self. This is important, for mental images tend to reproduce themselves in fact.

2. Talk to the health forces within yourself. Summon them to your aid every day.

3. Drain your mind of all thoughts and attitudes that breed ill health; ill will is one. Perhaps it is called ill will because it signifies a will sickened by hostile thoughts. "Goodwill" is the opposite and healthy state in which love is the curative element. The effect of mind on physical conditions is so profound that at his peril one will allow himself to harbor resentment, frustration, fear or guilt. Tensions created by such unhealthy attitudes can cause or aggravate many diseases.

4. Equally powerful in their effect on well-being are the healthy emotions, so fill your mind with love, forgiveness, and faith. Cultivate these qualities, and you will begin to feel better. They tend to tone up your whole being. And as one doctor said, "When you are in tune, you are in tone." These two steps are required daily: A mind emptying, and a mind filling. So every day say, "I now empty out of my mind every unhealthy thought." As you say this, hold a picture of your sick thoughts as being flushed from your mind. Then practice mind filling by affirming, "I now fill my mind with healthy thoughts; thoughts of love, generosity, and faith." Conceive of these attitudes as soaking deeply into your consciousness.

5. Practice prayer breathing. Take a brisk walk, breathing deeply in and out. Say, "I breathe out ill health, ill will, ill attitudes; I breathe in good health, goodwill, good attitudes. I breath out staleness; I breathe in vitality. I breath out godlessness; I breathe in godliness." Open your lungs, your heart, your mind, and your soul, and receive the gifts of vigor and energy. Let your whole being come alive to life.

6. Add up every reason you can think of for feeling happy, thankful, and healthy. Stress even the most basic things. Then simply thank God. As you practice adding up reasons for health and happiness, you'll be surprised at how many reasons you will find. It is a basic law of spirit, mind, and body."

It helps me to read this over and over once a week or so as I come to this in the booklet. I can't remember who said this, but it is something to live by. As long as I am leading a good, moral life and am happy with myself, others can say what they want about me. It won't change me nor bother me. I remember times when things were said about my handmade dresses when I was younger. I was ashamed that I couldn't have the storebought clothes the other girls had then, but I am proud that my mother took time to "sew every stitch with love" as Dolly Parton says in her song A Coat of Many Colors. Many children (and adults, too) would have a much happier life if they realized that what others think of them doesn't matter. Maybe then they wouldn't always be trying to please others and have the same or better than others have.

Success

I have had this saved in my computer forever, but I don't know where I got it from. I like to read it over and over as it applies to so many facets of my life - dancing, stuttering, relationships, career, family, friends, and on and on.......

Keys to Success

Passion – What is most beautiful and sacred to you? What would you feel incomplete without? When you have identified that which brings you complete joy, your own unquenchable desire to achieve that goal will become your passion – the inner drive that turns your dreams into a shining reality.

Vision – To attain your goal, you must first see it in your mind’s eye. Never underestimate your ability to transcend your imagination’s outermost limits and bring your vision to fruition. Throughout history, great accomplishments have begun with the vision of a single individual. Dream it and achieve it!

Preparation – Knowing where you can go starts with knowing where you are, and where you’ve been. Success isn’t a matter or luck – it requires practice, study, and strategy. Learn all you can about your passion. Master every last detail, and consider all the nuances and possibilities. Then don’t hold back.

Courage – That courage which overcomes all fear is born of a healthy yet realistic self-regard that exceeds your own expectations. There are achievers who looked within themselves, and found there the mental and moral strength to pursue their dreams and prevail despite hardship, pain, and mortal danger.

Perseverance – No great achievement comes without obstacles: physical limitations, the vagaries of nature, or resistance from the outside world. Although achievers sometimes meet with failure, they never abandon their dreams, but doggedly persevere until they succeed against the odds.

Integrity – The road that leads to real success has no real shortcuts, and no room for charlatans. True achievers know that its more important to do the right thing rather than the popular thing, and have built their accomplishments on personal systems of uncompromising standards and unwavering values.

The American Dream – In this land of opportunity, it means something different for everyone. But no matter what the definition, the achiever’s dream is the key to his or her vitality. It nurtures the excitement of limitless possibility, urging us to plan, to work, and ultimately to believe in ourselves.

Happiness

We must be happy with ourselves in order to find true happiness in life and with others. This poem tells it all:
Happiness

"Happiness is the greatest paradox in nature.
It can grow in any soil, live under any conditions.
It defies environment.
It comes from within; it is the revelation of the
depths of inner life as light and heat proclaim
the sun from which they radiate.
Happiness consists not of having, but of being;
not of possessing, but of enjoying.
A martyr at the stake may have happiness
that a king on his throne might envy.
Man is the creator of his own happiness;
it is the aroma of a life lived in harmony
with high ideals.
For what a man has, he may be dependent on others;
what he is rests with him alone.
Happiness is the soul’s joy in the possession of the intangible.
It is the warm glow of a heart at peace with itself."

- William George Jordan -

Motivation

"The importance of motivation cannot be exaggerated." - Hulit

"After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul,And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security,And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises,And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child,And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans.After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.And you learn that you really can endure…That you really are strong and you really do have worth.
